Nhimutimu

from Madzinga by Sekuru Tute Chigamba

about

As Sekuru Chigamba explains:

Nhimutimu is that dust that arises when people are dancing. The people who are dancing will say, “Now it has become nhimutimu, there goes the dust.”

Our houses being built the way they are, the dust escapes, rising to the outside. Once it has gone outside, that dust is what informs the Creator, “Your children have the following requests, which they are praying for.” One will end up saying, “Oh, when I left that bira ceremony, I went straight to look for work, and I found a job. So that bira is what helped me.”

Yes, that is nhimutimu. You were dancing, unaware. But that dust was doing its work, conveying your prayers. So now, they have been answered.
